In 2017, they established their custom crush facility called Grand Cru, across the street from DuMOL. The wines for this report were tasted in Sonoma with winemaker Joseph Ryan, who joined the team in 2018. Over the past few years of tasting these wines, I have become more impressed with the direction of this estate. Initially, I was drawn to their crisp, Burgundian-inspired whites, especially the refreshing, herbal-tinged Aligoté, which I considered an outstanding and versatile value for the wine list when I was a wine director in New York. Looking at the 2021 vintage, the bar has been raised across the board, and I highly encourage readers to seek out these wines, which retain a vibrant sense of place. He was an entrepreneur, a risk-taker and a role model for his grandson, Todd Gottula, who founded our winery with his wife, Erin Brooks, back in 2012. Today, the “Ernest” in our name stands for more than one man. It’s about integrity in the fruit we use and the people we know. It’s about restraint, about how ego drives nothing we do.

Todd and Erin are not only co-founders and co-owners of the winery; they touch every single aspect of the business. They connect with growers. They interact with distributors. They respond to customers. They deliver wines. They tackle paperwork. Just about the only thing the couple doesn’t do is make the wine—they leave that to Ernest’s winemaker, Joseph Ryan. A byproduct of all this hands-on leadership is an acute personal connection to the people behind the brand. Like the 2021 vintage, it’s the most floral and ethereal in the lineup, but this new release reaches new heights. It comes from the estate Bodega Headlands vineyard, where the vines already tend to give tiny berries and low yields. With 2022 being such a warm vintage, the crop was even smaller than usual, making the flavours and aromas way more vivid. With a highly expressive nose, you get a beautiful bouquet of violets and wet lavender mixed with the scent of cool, damp soil. A dusting of baking spice and a clean, salty breeze root this wine unmistakably in the West Sonoma Coast. On the palate, cranberries, pomegranate juice, and wild berries blend into a juicy and lively core. Satin-fine tannins bring just enough structure without getting in the way of the wine’s elegant frame. Bright acidity lifts everything into a long, satisfying finish. It’s a wow-moment wine. From an east-facing vineyard at 1,000 feet of elevation, this wine feels like it carries the breeze in every sip.
