The 176-case 2014 The Lovers checks in as 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Syrah that was brought up all in 40% new barrels. The Cabernet shows beautifully here with its blackcurrants, graphite and dried herbs, with some meaty, smoky notes (no doubt from the Syrah) coming through on the background. A big, rich, impressively concentrated red, with building tannin and a great mid-palate, it's beautiful today but will be even better in 2-3 years and I suspect will have two decades of longevity. I think the 2014 vintage from Christophe Baron will go down as one of the truly great vintages of the estate. The wines are notably deeper, richer and more concentrated than both the 2013s and 2015s, yet they have fabulous purity and elegance. (JD) 95+  (6/2017)

Bright medium ruby. Musky, smoky aromas of black raspberry, truffle and black olive complicated by a subtle earthy perfume; today the Syrah element dominates the nose. Plush, pliant and ripe, conveying a distinctly smoky quality and meat and truffle notes throughout. Nicely integrated wine with no rough edges, finishing with noteworthy length. (ST)  (10/2017)

Cabernet Sauvignon makes up 85% of this wine, with the balance Syrah. Bright aromas of plum, cassis, spice, herb, green pepper, blackberry bud and smoke are followed by a fruit forward palate showing a lovely sense of texture, balance and tension, with graphite notes throughout. It's remarkably fruit-filled for a wine from this region. (SS)  (10/2017)
