The assemblage is 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay. This is so fresh and tense and mineral with extremely exuberant chardonnay notes on the nose of white peach, lemon and yellow grapefruit, and hints of almost brambly sous bois aromas. The yeast characters are also super fresh, and there are subtle woody notes, with a hint of vanilla bean and light spices. The palate is super long, and very pure, powerful and focused. It drives deep and taut. Pinot Noir is a strong core and the Chardonnay sits at the edge offering lemon and white nectarine sorbet flavors. Staggeringly concentrated, yet the balance makes it seem airy and light. Acidity is perfectly positioned, and the power is intense and long. This is an ultra precise Cristal, finishing with a mere suggestion of savoriness and warmth to come. Impressive on release, this will be at its best drinking from 2025. 100 points" - James Suckling (1/2018)

"This latest incarnation of the famous brand is a superb wine. It is on par with, maybe even better than, the already legendary 2002. Its balance is impeccable: Apple and citrus flavors working with the tight minerality to give a textured yet fruity wine. Produced from Roederer's own vineyards which are mainly biodynamic, the wine has its own intense purity and crispness. It has amazing potential and is likely to age for many years. A stunning wine from any and all perspectives, the 2008 simply has it all. Spherical in construction, with superb persistence. The 2008 takes hold of all the senses and never gives up. One of the many things that makes the 2008 special is a combination of ripe fruit and bright, piercing acidity. Marzipan, lemon confit, dried flowers and orchard fruit all build into the explosive, resonant finish. “We learned from the mistakes of 1996, when we picked more on acid than ripeness, as was the norm in Champagne back then” Chef de Caves Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon told me recently. “In 1996, the best fruit turned out to be the last picks, where the fruit was physiologically ripe. Named for the 17th-century Benedictine monk Dom Pierre Pérignon, who served as cellarmaster at the Abbey of Hautvillers, the house traces its philosophical roots to his obsessive pursuit of quality, a standard that laid the groundwork for prestige cuvée Champagne as we know it today and that few houses have managed to match across nearly a century of releases.

The 2008 Dom Pérignon has quietly become one of the most discussed bottles in their storied history, and the critical consensus is unusually unanimous. Antonio Galloni at Vinous matched that score, placing it among "the all-time greats." Master of Wine Jasper Morris has returned to this bottle repeatedly since its release, urging readers to "believe the hype," and noting that after more than 20 tastings he finds it "simply stunning."

"Easily the best Champagne I had all year, first tasted at a château lunch. I couldn't stop thinking about it, and eventually bought a bottle for my husband's 50th. I've tasted this over 20 times since its release. Richard Geoffroy (ex-chef-de-cave) used his experience of the similar 1996 vintage, waiting for a little extra ripeness before picking (waiting for that critical phenolic ripeness). A champagne that is evolving at a glacial pace, my tasting note is almost unchanged. Still that superb freshness of fruit (with just a kick of creaminess beginning to show on the finish). Weightless intensity is married to precise and gorgeous aromatics, a long pithy finish with plenty of dry extract waiting to develop. The toastiness is discreet for the moment, but it will come. Simply stunning.” 98 - Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy (2/23)

"Dom Pérignon is named after 17th-century Benedictine monk Dom Pierre Pérignon (1638-1715), who is said to have invented sparkling wine while cellarmaster at the Abbey of Hautvillers. In truth, his task was to find a way to prevent a second fermentation in the bottle as the bottles were exploding. Dom Pérignon is a vintage Champagne made using an approximate blend of 50/50 Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. It is one of the highest-rated and most desirable Champagnes on the market. Michelle Cherutti-Kowal MW: Brioche, almonds and red apples on the nose and palate. Great balance with dosage and acidity. Excellent combination of fruit and bottle age. Stefan Neumann MS: Top-notch salty, mineral, iodine-like aromas. Showing a wonderful sourdough-like character with delicate roasted nuts. Depth and drive, elegance and power. Matt Walls: Deep, intense, full-bodied style of Champagne, voluminous, generous, very powerful and thunderous. Very long – this is a great wine. So harmonious. This is a rich, powerful wine that still shows incredible purity and elegance, with a stacked, concentrated feel on the palate. It’s rare to find such a mix of ripe, pure, concentrated fruit paired with this level of purity, focus, and precision. This is a legendary Dom that surpasses all the great vintages of Dom I have experience with, including the 1990, 1996, and 2002.” 98 - Jeb Dunnuck (12/18)

"Deep and generous, yet driven, with delicious salted-butter and salted-caramel notes underneath the initial lemon and chalk. Drink or hold.” 98 - James Suckling (6/22)

"This is yet another confirmation in what is already an extended list of just how great the 2008 vintage is in Champagne. Moreover, unlike some '08s which are beginning to display some development, even secondary characteristics, the Dom remains quite backward, indeed even grumpy. A reluctant and compact nose of yeast, lemon-lime, quinine and Granny Smith apple remains reluctant even with extended airing and while I'm not generally a fan of decanting Champagne (too much effervescence lost!), this is a wine where I might be inclined to do so. The palate impression of the chiseled, indeed laser-like, flavors is borderline painful as the super-fine but quite dense mousse is seriously, seriously intense while the bone-dry, equally compact and driving finish is perfectly balanced though decidedly austere. I believe this will be, note carefully the emphasis on will be, one of the all-time great vintages for DP but it's honestly pointless to open a bottle now, unless you're just curious, that's just how backward it is.” 97 - Allen Meadows, Burghound (10/24)

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0092/1419/7817/products/unnamed_993217af-9f96-4074-8a12-2e04f1020df9.jpg?v=1600124489
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0092/1419/7817/files/images_b8e635e0-d79a-4893-9bf7-c3a1f052fa48.jpg?v=1778877613
2012-bollinger-brut-rose-la-grande-annee-750ml-pre-arrival
2012 Bollinger "La Grande Année" Brut Rosé Champagne (750ml)

La Grande Année Rosé is another expression of La Grande Année, Champagne Bollinger’s prestige cuvée, made exclusively from Grand Cru and Premier Cru fruit. The aim, as Cellar Master Eric Lebel describes it, is not to produce the same wine each year, but to produce the best possible wine each year, so every rendition of Grande Cuvée is different—differences that are now highlighted by Krug's laudable decision to enumerate each successive release. A lengthier visit shortly after this issue goes to press will delve deeper into the secrets of the maison that many—the present writer included—would denominate as Champagne's greatest house, but for now, all the wines reviewed here evidently come warmly recommended, and they are striking testimony to Krug's remarkable consistency." (4/2019)

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0092/1419/7817/products/unnamed_0a5641c9-183b-4b32-9b54-dba7667b64bd.png?v=1605830651
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0092/1419/7817/products/4b624faf-1512-46b5-9ab6-3bba599ff85a.jpg?v=1608334499

2022 Base. Mildew,
rain and frost were challenges and resulted in low yields, something
that was further compounded by warm, dry weather that concentrated the
fruit even more. In fact, it is one of the best recent editions I can remember tasting. What comes through most is the wine’s sizzling energy and tension, qualities that aren’t often associated with Bollinger, where the Champagnes tend to show more breadth and volume. In 2014, readers will find a Grande Année built on linear intensity and drive. The 2014 is a blend taken from 19 villages, 61% Pinot Noir and 39% Chardonnay instead of the more typical 70/30 mix. For the second time in two decades (the first was 2007), Verzenay takes the lead in the Pinots over Aÿ, more or less an inverse from the norm. Verzenay, a north-facing village in the Montagne de Reims that saw less rain than Aÿ and most of the Vallée de la Marne, yields Pinots of energy more than volume. That, married with Chardonnays mostly from the Côtes des Blancs (predominantly Chouilly, Vertus, Oiry and Cramant), results in a truly magical Grande Année that will delight Champagne fans for several decades.

In her perfect 100-point review, Jane Anson called it "easily the best Champagne I had all year," adding that she "couldn't stop thinking about it." Falstaff's Peter Moser matched that score, calling it simply "world class." Jeb Dunnuck awarded it 98 points, calling it "a legendary Dom that surpasses all the great vintages of Dom I have experience with, including the 1990, 1996, and 2002," citing its rare combination of concentrated fruit with purity and precision.

Just so much power and precision, while still having the delicacy, easy glamour and the most moreish delivery of fresh acidities and fleshy citrus. At it opens, toasted brioche, liqourice root and oyster shell curl out of the glass. Richard Geoffroy cellar master.” 100 - Jane Anson (6/21)

"Light golden yellow, silver reflections, fine, persistent mousse. Touches of brioche underneath nuances of yellow tropical fruit, notes of peach and pineapple, citrus zest, discreet blossom honey, also toasted nut nuances and floral-mineral notes. Complex, pleasant fruit expression, juicy fruit notes, savoury nuances, taut acidity, rich but with finesse and so perfectly balanced, salty-smoky finish. No longer a young Champagne, the 2008 has begun moving into its first plateau of maturity. Baked apple tart, citrus confit, marzipan and lightly honeyed overtones are front and center. A touch of reduction—always present in 2008—adds freshness and energy. (Drink between 2026-2048)” 98 - Antonio Galloni, Vinous (4/25)

"Believe the hype!

Gold, Top 100 of 2019” 98 - James Halliday (6/21)

"The 2008 Dom Pérignon is the first time the estate has released a wine out of order (the 2009 was released before the 2008) but the estate loved the wine so much they felt it warranted additional aging.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0092/1419/7817/files/unnamed_993217af-9f96-4074-8a12-2e04f1020df9.jpg?v=1712600279
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0092/1419/7817/files/2018FlavienNowackChampagneExtraBrutBlancdeBlancsLaTuilerie.webp?v=1731973203

Recently named "One of the finest producers of contemporary Champagne” by the Wine Advocate, Champagne Dhondt Grellet has emerged as a truly exciting avant-garde producer under the leadership of winemaker Adrien Dhondt, who started working at his family's estate in 2012 at only 22 years old.

In their glowing recent feature, The Wine Advocate declared that "there’s no doubt that the winemaker, once dubbed the best young vigneron, has matured and is now producing the best wines of his career,” adding simply that "readers who share the admiration for Champagne’s ongoing artisanal wine-growing movement will want to seek out a few bottles with urgency.”

Recently named "One of the finest producers of contemporary Champagne” by the Wine Advocate, Champagne Dhondt-Grelleet has emerged as a truly exciting avant-garde producer under the leadership of winemaker Adrien Dhondt, who started working at his family's estate in 2012 at only 22 years old.

In a glowing recent feature, The Wine Advocate declared that "there’s no doubt that the winemaker, once dubbed the best young vigneron, has matured and is now producing the best wines of his career,” adding simply that "readers who share the admiration for Champagne’s ongoing artisanal wine-growing movement will want to seek out a few bottles with urgency.”

In 2018, Adrien began a small-scale négociant project under his own name, working with fruit from villages such as Avize, Oger and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. Disgorged in February 2025 with a dosage of one gram per liter, the wine unfurls in the glass with aromas of lemon confit, dried flowers and iodine, mingled with sandalwood and smoky reduction. On the palate, it is full-bodied and concentrated, driven by succulent yet racy acidity and culminating in a long, chalky finish. One should anticipate a more generous expression than Dhondt’s wines from the Côte des Blancs; yet, with quality of this caliber, it can hardly be regarded as an entry-level cuvée. Readers familiar with my previous article will recall that the grapes are sourced from plots in two villages—Barbonne-Fayel (planted in 1974–1975) and Fontaine Denis (planted in 1965, 1967 and 1969)—characterized by deeper soils and silex pebbles, which release a distinctly flinty aroma when struck together. The blend is predominantly Chardonnay, with a small proportion—averaging around 10%—of Pinot Noir. This love and appreciation for his grandfather is reflected on the label of his Champagnes.

92% Pinot Noir, 8% Chardonnay
40 year old vines
Terroirs: Avenay Val d'Or / Bisseuil – Mareuil-sur-Ay

Harvest: 2022
Dosage: 0 g/L
Disgorging date: April 12, 2025

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0092/1419/7817/files/antoine-bouvet-champagne-le-monts-de-la-vallee-rose-extra-brut_47240_1.webp?v=1727823393
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0092/1419/7817/files/a62e4ec2-8024-4e3e-98b2-efe997eb1cf4.jpg?v=1773095096
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0092/1419/7817/files/2cff7bea-6193-49c6-b642-b38195a36205.jpg?v=1755724789
2022-schramsberg-north-coast-blanc-de-blancs-brut-sparkling-wine-750ml-copy
2022 Schramsberg North Coast Blanc de Blancs Brut Sparkling Wine (750ml)

92 points Wine Spectator

Dynamic and fragrant, offering lemon blossom, orange peel and blanched almond flavors. It is produced without dosage and raised for 10 months in small casks. Only a small number is produced - about 1,700 bottles a year.
