Outer quote mark The 1978 is a lovely, classic synthesis of the cooler fruit tones of 1978 and the classic terroir of Haut Brion. The bouquet offers up a lovely blend of blackberries, paraffin, tobacco ash, Graves earth, a bit of bell pepper and a lovely, pungent topnote of violet. On the palate the wine is medium-full, refined and elegant, with great complexity, fine mid-palate depth, and lovely length and grip on the tangy, meltingly tannic finish. Interestingly, I tasted this wine twice in a span of six months, with one bottle paired up against the ’74 Mondavi Reserve Cabernet, and the second in a vertical Haut Brion tasting. The slightly “green” aspect of the ’78 Haut Brion was quite pronounced following hard on the heels of the 1985 and 1982 Haut Brions in the vertical tasting, and yet seemed a non-factor when paired up with the more herbal Napa cabernet aspects of the very good ’74 Mondavi. Outer quote mark At a lovely, mature level, yet still sweet and inviting, with a veil of chewy tannins around the pretty raspberry flavors and a touch of herb to enliven the finish.--Haut-Brion vertical. Inner quote mark (4/1997)
