Yes, even for a California Pinot, this is a big, strong, full-bodied wine. Southing always is. It could almost morph into a Cabernet Sauvignon. But who cares? It’s compellingly delicious, and isn’t that what wine is all about? Flavorwise, it tastes of cherries, oranges, red currants, violets, raspberries, cedar and peppery spices, with 65% new oak. Saturated red. Powerfully scented nose displays sexy red and dark berry liqueur, candied cherry and a musky floral quality. Deeply concentrated black raspberry and cherry flavors are energized by tangy minerals and pick up rooty licorice and sassafras with air. Finishes with notes of black pepper and smoky Indian spices and excellent persistence. (JR) (12/2008)

Firm and well-structured, with a mix of spicy dried berry, currant, blackberry and blueberry, picking up a nice touch of mineral and sage and ending with well-integrated tannins. (JL) (9/2008)

Wine Advocate
The 2006 Pinot Noir Southing exhibits an evolved medium ruby color as well as a big, spicy, earthy nose displaying hints of roasted herbs, sweet cherries, and red currants. The complex aromatics are followed by a medium-bodied wine with complex flavors, melted tannins, and plenty of red fruit as well as tart cherries. (RP) (12/2008)
