2009 Clos de la Tech "Domaine Valeta - Sunny Slope" Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir (750ml)15 1 0 0
The cool, airy and elegant nose offers up notes of pure raspberry, red currant, plum and a whisper of violet. There is solid vibrancy and detail to the medium weight flavors that are shaped by moderately firm tannins that impart a mild edginess to the otherwise lingering finish that also displays a touch of warmth. The balance is slightly better here than in the Twisty Ridge and Côte Sud, though it isn't perfect.
Owned by TJ Rodgers who founded Cypress Semiconductor, Clos de la Tech, established in 1994, produces five pinot noirs from three estate vineyards, with the largest being the 163-acre Domaine Lois Louis with 80 acres of pinot noir planted. The winemaking program features hand harvesting, foot crushing, and whole cluster fermentations with native yeasts. With Rodgers background, there is a myriad of equipment he has designed from the tractor inspired by the steep slopes of the Mosel Valley in Germany to a giant French press which is apparently the first of its kind that makes press fractions "all but obsolete." Fermentations are monitored wirelessly. In spite of the high tech, Rodgers insists his inspiration comes from the Old World wines of Burgundy and that is where he said he places his primary focus.
