2016 ArPePe Valtellina Superiore Nebbiolo Il Pettirosso (750ml)15 0 0 0
"ArPePe represents the essence of tradition in Valtellina. Long fermentations and lengthy aging in cask gently coax the essence of each site in this range. The wines are delicate, powerful and full of nuance at the same, in the way only Nebbiolo can be. Readers with classically leaning palates will find so much to admire..." - Antonio Galloni (Vinous)
ArPePe stands for Arturo Pelizzatti Perego. Emanuele, Isabella & Guido Pelizzatti-Perego are Arturo's children and the fifth generation vanguards of the estate.
About the wine: (c/o ArPePe)
The Pettirosso (Robin Redbreast) can be found everywhere in the woods that now look down on the Valtellina, which was once under vine far higher up. Robins rarely enter the cellar, but that day one came in and alighted on an old wooden barrel, as if warning us of something. A few days later, while she was tasting the wine, Isabella noticed there was a slight leak from one of the acacia staves.
The wine appeared to be ready for bottling, but the barrel unfortunately needed replacing. There wasn’t enough to warrant a new label so she and Emanuele chose a few barrels of that ’97 – the most mature – and it became Il Pettirosso.
Arturo designed the first labels and so, to continue the family tradition, Isabella asked her husband Enrico to do it, in view of the success of the first Rosso di Valtellina.
"Il Pettirosso, or 'robin redbreast', is a dedication to Ar Pe Pe’s founder, Arturo who first created this bottling in 1997. A selection of casks ready to be bottled after relatively minimal ageing, it brings together parcels in the subzones of Sassella and Grumello. Piercing pure rose, cherry blossom and tobacco lead the way to a nucleus of sweet raspberry, red cherry and subtle flintiness. It's fine-boned in frame and zesty in acidity, with silky-smooth tannins that glide effortlessly across the palate. The epitome of elegance." 93 points - Michaela Morris (Decanter, Nov. 2020)
"The Valtellina 'Il Pettirosso' from Ar.Pe.Pe. is made from Nebbiolo vines that range from fifty to one hundred years of age. The wine is given a traditional, long maceration and then aged in older botti prior to bottling; it is given two years of bottle aging in the cellars as well prior to release. The 2016 Il Pettirosso offers up a beautifully complex bouquet of bitter cherry, bonfire, camphor, gamebird, stony soil tones, rose petals and a hint of orange peel in the upper register. On the palate the wine is bright, full-bodied and transparent, with a lovely core of fruit, ripe, buried tannins, tangy acids and excellent mineral drive on the long, complex and perfectly balanced finish. This is still a young wine and will benefit from more bottle age, but it is so well balanced that it is already quite easy to drink. (Drink between 2020-2040)" 92+ points - John Gilman (View From the Cellar, Jul/Aug 2020)
"Here's a beautiful wine with a great human story behind it. Fruit from 50-year-old vines planted in friable granitic mountain soils is carried down to the winery in small cassettes on the hearty shoulders of the harvesters. With some 24,000 bottles made, the Ar. Pe. Pe. 2016 Valtellina Superiore Nebbiolo Il Pettirosso is perfumed with rosebud, wild berry, sour cherry and crushed stone. All that backbreaking human labor leads to a soft and gently polished red wine to pair with a classic buckwheat pasta from this ski-loving region." 92 points - Monica Larner (Wine Advocate, Feb. 2021)
