"Castellare's I Sodi di San Niccolò is the single most overlooked high-end wine in Tuscany today. The 2016 picks up where the 2015 left off. A rush of inky dark fruit, lavender, spice, licorice, gravel, blueberry and menthol builds as the 2016 shows off its exceptional balance and pedigree. Readers will have to be patient, as the 2016 needs a few years in bottle to fully come together. Even so, the 2016 has been nothing less than spectacular on the two occasions I have tasted it so far. In a word: monumental. 98 points" - Antonio Galloni (Vinous, August 2020)

The word "i sodi" was used by the Tuscan farmers to describe those grounds which had to be worked on by hand, being too hard or too steep to allow the use of horses. San Niccolò is the name of the Church of 1300 which stands in the Castellare farm and around which are some of the best vineyards. A different bird chosen among dying species is represented every year on the labels of Castellare as a sign of their care towards the environment. The use of herbicides and pesticides is avoided as well as of any other kind of systemic chemical products. Hunting prohibitions, together with this kind of cultivation, has favoured the return of many species of local fauna in the area.

The 2016 I Sodi di San Niccolò is composed of 85% Sangioveto and 15% Malvasia Nera.
