2017-cantina-del-pino-barbaresco-750ml-copy
2021 Cantina del Pino Barbaresco (750ml)

One of the oldest estates in Barbaresco, the Vacca family has been living and working the vines at Cantina del Pino, since the 1920s when Giuseppe Vacca, bought the property from his friend, the legendary agronomist and director of the Royal Enological School in Alba, Domizio Cavazza.

On the day his son Luigi was born, Cavazza had planted a pine tree in the backyard of his property to mark the highest point of the Ovello Hill. To pay homage to the special friendship between Giuseppe and Domizio, the property which locally had been known as Cascina Casotto, was re-named after the pine tree and is now the Cantina del Pino.

Branching out from the legendary Produttori del Barbaresco Cooperative, Renato Vacca (the great grandson of Giuseppe Vacca) convinced his father, Adriano, to start their own label in 1997. In 2013 Franca (Renato’s wife) joined the winery. Unfortunately, Renato passed in 2020. Franca, a winemaker in her own right, along with Renato’s parents continues the traditions and dedication to the quality wines of Cantina del Pino, the historic winery on the Ovello Hill.

"A pretty red, this exudes cherry, strawberry, pomegranate and rose flavors, plus a touch of earth. Open and harmonious, yet with a firm, vibrant structure that will allow this to age gracefully. Offers terrific length and a fruit-driven aftertaste. Best from 2029 through 2046. 1,000 cases made, 400 cases imported.” 95 - Bruce Sanderson, Senior Editor, The Wine Spectator (3/26)

"The Cantina del Pino 2021 Barbaresco (with 12,000 bottles made) is perfumed and nuanced with pretty fruit tones of cassis and dried cherry and an equally important floral side with rose potpourri and iris root. The wine starts fermentation in both stainless steel and oak vats, and it matures in large oak casks for 24 months before going into bottle. It glides over the palate with polished tannins and a lean to mid-weight mouthfeel. I'd give this vintage a little more bottle age to allow it to flesh out further.Drink Date: 2026 - 2040.” 94 - Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate (6/25)

"Rose, crushed mint, hay and camphor aromas form the enticing nose. Linear and elegantly structured, the palate shows the rather austere nature of the vintage, featuring juicy red cherry blood orange and star anise alongside taut, fine-grained tannins. Give this time to fully develop. Drink 2031–2036.” 94 - Kerin O’Keefe (5/25)
