2018 Domaine Paul Pillot Saint Aubin Charmois 1er (750ml) Pre-Arrival
89-92 points Allen Meadows - Burghound
This too has enough sulfur on the nose to mask the underlying fruit. The rounder and slightly less mineral-driven medium-bodied flavors possess very good energy while offering just a bit more complexity on the lingering, balanced and refreshingly dry finale.
Thierry Pillot said that, much like 2017, 2018 "began early and ended early. We began picking on the 26th of August and picked through to the 7th of September. Despite a quick flowering, maturities were not necessarily uniform from one parcel to another and thus it was necessary to monitor each of them separately to be sure that you weren't picking too early but equally important was to be sure that you were picking too late. The fruit was clean and yields were comfortable without being especially high. Potential alcohols were also good but not really high, so no corrections were required. As I have been doing over the last few vintages, I have been very prudent about the new wood percentages and in 2018 I used no more than 10% and some wines saw none at all. As to the style of the 2018s, they're definitely ripe but not so ripe that they lose typicity. Moreover, I think that they have very good development potential." I would note that the wines were being prepared for the bottling and thus some of them were reduced or display sulfur-tinged aromas. (6/2020)
