2014 Marchesi di Gresy Barbaresco Riserva Camp Gros Martinenga (750ml) Pre-Arrival15
"This is a stellar set of wines from Marchesi di Grèsy. As has been the norm now for a few years, the Barbarescos are presented in a staggered fashion so that this year's new releases span three vintages. The Martinenga and Camp Gros Barbarescos are aged for a year in barrique and then 12 months in cask for the Martinenga and 15 months in cask for Camp Gros. The Gaiun, on the other hand, sees only French oak barriques, of which about 30% are new. Those are but mere details, though, because all the Barbarescos I tasted on my most recent were sublime and well worth seeking out." - Antonio Galloni (Vinous)
The Camp Gros is the pride of the house and has been produced since 1978 and only in the best vintages. It is made from a special selection of grapes coming from a small part of the Martinenga vineyard near Rabajà. It is on the eastern end of the amphiteatre with a south-southwest exposure at an altitude from 240m to 290m.
"Marchesi di Grésy's 2014 Barbaresco Riserva Camp Gros Martinenga is a vibrant, finely-sculpted wine that captures the natural austerity of the year beautifully. Chalk, mint, pine, blood orange, rose petal and bright red cherry all develop in the glass, but it is really the wine's sizzling energy and tension that stand out most. This is an especially nervous style, and yet all the elements meld together so naturally. Pine, mint, cedar, tobacco, dried herbs add an attractive savory nuance as the wine starts to open up in the glass. The 2014 needs at least a few years in bottle, that is abundantly clear." 95 points - Antonio Galloni (Vinous, August 2019)
