2016 Schiavenza Barolo Cerretta (750ml)15 4 0 0
"Schiavenza is without question an estate to watch." - Antonio Galloni (Vinous)
Schiavenza is located in Serralunga d'Alba in the heart of Piedmont's Langhe district. Founded in 1956 by the brothers Vittorio and Ugo Alessandria, the estate and surrounding area were formerly part of the Opera Pia Barolo (like Barolo's Hospices du Beaune) whose vineyards were traditionally worked by sharecroppers. The local dialect for sharecropping is schiavenza. The estate is run today by the second-generation Alessandria sisters, Enrica and Maura, and their husbands Luciano Pira and Walter Anselma.
"This wine is a true beauty. In this release of 5,240 bottles, the 2016 Barolo Cerretta takes that Nebbiolo purity and intensity up a significant notch, especially when you compare this cru to Schiavenza's classic Barolo and its Barolo made with fruit sourced across Serralunga d'Alba. You get a lot of expressive clarity here, with a pristine delivery that puts emphasis on wild berry fruits, blood orange, rusty earth and even a touch of bitter cacao. I love the manner in which all those aromas pile together in such a nicely layered manner." 95 points - Monica Larner (Wine Advocate, July 2020)
