"One of the first vertical tastings I did in Chianti Classico was a complete vertical of I Sodi di San Niccolò about fifteen years ago with proprietor Paolo Panerai and winemaker Alessandro Cellai. It was a key moment in my understanding of the region and the potential of its wines. Since then, Panerai and Cellai have scaled even greater heights. This year’s wines are tremendous." - Antonio Galloni (Vinous)
In the town of Castellina, Castellare’s vineyards are at 1200 feet elevation – only a few Chianti Classico vineyards are higher. The vineyards of this 46-acre property are found in a natural amphitheater in the heart of the Classico region. At Castellare the yield-per-acre is very low, far lower than the maximum level allowed by Chianti Classico DOCG rules, which enhances the concentration of aromas and flavors.
Their property has become a virtual refuge for wildlife including many of the birds pictured on their labels. With each vintage, the Castellare label shows a different bird, symbolizing the estate’s commitment to environmentally sound cultivation. The birds selected for the labels are among the rarest creatures in Chianti, and represent birds threatened by extinction, mostly due to synthetic chemical products and hunting, both of which are forbidden on this property.
"The 2018 Chianti Classico is an absolutely joyous wine. Bright red cherry fruit, tangy acids and sweet floral notes all run a translucent, super-expressive Chianti Classico that quite frankly knocks it out of the park. The 2018 is so delineated, so vibrant and just so incredibly delicious. The purity of the flavors is just remarkable. The oak needs a bit of time to fully integrate, but it already has over the last few months. This is what Sangiovese (called Sangioveto here) and Chianti Classico are all about. Best of all, the 2018 is a screaming value. Don't miss it...The 2018 Chianti Classico is the sort of wine readers should buy by the case. It is delicious and affordable." 92 points - Antonio Galloni (Vinous, August 2020
"Sweet-cherry and vanilla aromas and flavors. It’s medium-to full-bodied with round tannins and a fruity finish. Nicely done. Delicious now." 91 points - James Suckling (July 2020)
