2018 Rudi Pichler Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Ried Hochrain (750ml)
Rudi Pichler is among the elite growers of the Wachau producing wines of precision, power, and longevity. The cellar is based in the village of Wösendorf where generations of Pichlers have tended vines since 1731.
This wine is from the Hochrain vineyard, a name meaning "high place". It is a southeast-facing terraced vineyard in Wösendorf sitting between 200 and 300 meters (650 to nearly 1,000 ft) of elevation. The vineyard consists of an unusually high content of loess, a mineral-laden soil that produces wines that are especially broad and rich.
"Shows an elegant profile, with crystalline purity to the vibrant flavors of Bosc pear, peach, grapefruit and mineral. Structurally impressive, displaying impeccable balance, this hums through to the finish, inviting you to reach for more. Should reward aging. Best from 2021 through 2033. 150 cases made, 20 cases imported. 95 points" — AZ (Wine Spectator, Aug. 2020)
