"The 2016 vintage marks the first commercial release at Amorotti. Gaetano Carboni has been slowly building toward this moment since he took the reins of his family's farm in 2000. Carboni works fifty hectares of pastures, crops, olive groves and, of course, vines. However, it’s only on five hectares that he grows Montepulciano and Trebbiano Abruzzese, all through organic principals to fill his portfolio of wines. Carboni’s famous neighbors, the Valentini family, helped him in choosing the clones to plant in his vineyards, barrels to use in his cellar, and techniques to hone his craft. Up until 2016, Carboni sold the majority of his fruit, keeping only enough for himself to experiment and supply his friends and family. The release prices here are higher than you might expect for a new producer, but when you consider the raw materials and future potential, the Amorotti wines are worth checking out.
"The 2017 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo opens up with youthful poise, at first floral with hints of violets and lavender, yet then deepens through a display of crushed blackberries and exotic spice. It's silky in feel, with vibrant acids ushering in an energetic mix of herbal-tinged wild berries and minerals, as fine tannins slowly emerge toward the close. Though grippy and structured, there's still so much pleasure to be found here, as the 2017 tapers off with a twang of salted black licorice. This is a balanced and elegant effort for the vintage." - Eric Guido (Vinous, March 2021)
