96 points John Gilman - The View from the Cellar

The 1990 Saarburger Rausch Goldkapsel is a magical bottle of botrytized Auslese at its absolute apogee of maturity. The utterly profound nose soars from the glass in a haunting mélange of lemon, sweet corn, petrol, yellow plum, tea leaves and a glorious bath of slate minerality. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, tangy and laser-like in its focus, with brilliant cut and grip, stunning depth in the mid-palate and an unbelievably long, complex and dancing finish. This is an utterly brilliant bottle of Auslese that has peaked, and will no doubt continue to drink profoundly well for at least another twenty years. As this is AP #2, I have to assume that this wine was sold at auction back in the day, though as it came out of Hanno Zilliken’s own cellar, there was of course no sticker designating it as an auction wine. One could not ask for a better, botrytized Auslese. (Drink between 2007-2025) (2/2008)
